Formally the Carnegie Library and added to the list of National Register of Historic Places in 1980, the Brookings Arts Council (BAC) encourages community connections through the arts by providing a supportive environment for awareness, appreciation, and participation. For more than 40 years, the BAC has pursued its purpose not only to entertain and educate the public but also to increase opportunities for artists to gain recognition. The Annual Juried Art and Photography exhibitions bring together the work of many regional artists, and also provides a platform for the community’s youngest artists by partnering with area schools to sponsor exhibits of work by students. The original building was built in 1914 and served as the Carnegie Library until 1976, shortly after the BAC took responsibility for the former cultural center and merged into what it is today, making art happen. In 2017, the BAC went through major renovations, including a new roof and ADA accessible features. The building was thoughtfully constructed to fit into the 21st century with help and planning from the City of Brookings, Historic Preservation Committee, and a private donor.
