Exhibit Opening & Reception | Richard Van Buren

The South Dakota Art Museum welcomes a new exhibit, Richard Van Buren: Material Witness, to the gallery in Brookings. This new exhibit is open January 12, with an artist reception as well. Van Buren will give a brief talk at 5:45 p.m., but the exhibit will be open through May 20, 2018. Admission is free to the museum and parking is available just west of the museum on Harvey Dunn Street.

Richard Van Buren has been exploring the relationship of the organic and man-made in his plastic sculptural objects since the mid-1960s. His cast resin and thermoplastic sculptures are expressive abstractions. Impregnated with a range of materials like fiberglass, shells, glitter and costume jewelry, they pop with intense translucent colors, reflective glints and hidden treasures. Van Buren taught at the School of Visual Arts and Parsons School of Design in New York from 1967 – 2001 and now lives and works in Perry, Maine. He was the 2013 winner of Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.
