DESCRIPTION:The South Dakota Association for Play Therapy\, in conjunction with South Dakota State University’s Counseling & Human Development Department\, present:\nLooking Deeper into the Presenting Problem: Practicing Cultural Humility and Ethics in the Play Therapy Room \nFeaturing Carmen Jimenez-Pride\, LCSW\, RPT-S\, ICST \nWhen working with culturally diverse populations the need to look deeper into the presenting problem is more prevalent with those exhibiting symptoms of racial trauma on the rise. Often times clinical professionals are minimizing cultural and racial experiences in their treatment of Black\, Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC). This workshop will focus on bringing cultural humility and ethics into the play therapy setting and challenging all play therapists and mental health professionals with examining their potential biases\, how they show up in their work and their impact on the clients served. \nTheoretical Basis: Adlerian \nObjectives \nFollowing this workshop\, participants will be able to: \n– Define and analyze culture\, cultural competence and cultural humility\, \n– Identify the therapeutic powers of play and the relationship with diverse populations\, \n– Discuss play therapy with a cultural humility perspective\, \n– List ways in which play therapists can practice cultural humility within their play therapy settings\, \n– Analyze current play therapy practices and the role of the play therapist\, \n– Discuss therapeutic models and perspectives for focusing on culture and race that can be incorporated into play therapy practice\, and \n– Demonstrate play therapy activities that can be utilized in the playroom and sandtray. \nAgenda \n8:30 – 9:00 am – Attendee registration \n9:00 – 11:30 am – Conference \n11:30 am – 12:30 pm – Lunch on Your Own \n12:30 pm – 4:00 pm – Conference \n4:00 pm – Evaluations & Dismissal \nAbout the Presenter \nCarmen Jimenez-Pride is the creative mind behind Focus on Feelings®\, an emotional literacy curriculum\, she is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker\, Registered Play Therapist Supervisor\, Certified AutPlay® Therapy Provider\, Certified EMDR Therapist\, Registered Children’s Yoga Teacher and Certified Internal Family Systems Therapist. Carmen is also a Certified LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Facilitator. \nCarmen is a trauma therapist experienced in the clinical treatment of children\, adolescents\, and adults with culturally diverse backgrounds addressing a wide range of concerns. Carmen’s career in the mental health field spans more than 15 years. \nCarmen is an international speaker\, award-winning best-selling author\, and business consultant. She is a visionary in the therapeutic community\, working to create and develop a wide range of educational tools to assist the clinician\, and the client to reach optimum goals. With a focus on cultural humility and cultural diversity\, Carmen educates clinical professionals to address racial and cultural trauma within their clinical practices. \nCarmen is currently serving as the South Carolina Association for Play Therapy President and the recipient of the 2021 Association for Play Therapy Emerging Leader Award. DESCRIPTION:The Great Depression came to farmers in the fall of 1920 and only ended with the start of America’s involvement in World War II.  When the farm economy collapsed\, the entire state economy collapsed\, with businesses failing and declining revenues limiting the state government’s ability to function.  Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal saved farming\, but also created a greater dependency upon government subsidies.  We’ll dive into these topics and more when we welcome Dr. Chuck Vollan to the museum to discuss our newest exhibit in the museum.  This event is free and open to the public\, and refreshments will be provided.

Students work with the dance ensemble director to develop work that communicates with intention and purpose. This season the theme of the concert is Dreams and Nightmares. This performance features dances exploring the myriad of contexts that Dreams and Nightmares inspires. Choreographers and dancers work collaboratively to devise new work that shares stories relevant to contemporary content.
