South Dakota State University's successful collegiate athletics program is comprised of 21 varsity sports. During the 2012-13 academic year, five Jackrabbit teams (football, men's basketball, women's basketball, equestrian and baseball) qualified for postseason competition. In addition, SDSU claimed both the Summit League Commissioner's Cup, for broad-based success in both men's and women's athletics, as well as the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men's All-Sports Trophy. SDSU baseball has been a successful winner on the baseball diamond at Erv Huether Field. The Jackrabbits have reached the championship of the Summit League postseason tournament four times in the last five season. The made history in 2013 by winning the league tournament title to advance to the NCAA Tournament for th first time at Division I level. In addition, many of our Jackrabbit players have pursued professional playing careers in recent years, highlighted by current Minnesota Twins pitcher Caleb Thielbar.
The SDSU men's baskeball team has gradually climbed the ladder in the Summit League, winning two consecutive league tournaments to qualifiy for the NCAA Tournament in 2012 and 2013. Nate Wolters, who was drafted to play for the Milwaukee Bucks, led the Jackrabbits who also claimed their fist regular season Summit League championship during the 2012-13 season. The Jackrabbits began the longest home winning streak in Division I men's basketball, having won 30 games in a row at Frost Arena duing the 2013-14 season.
The women's Jackrabbit basketball team set the standard for excellence in the Summit League, winning five consecutive Summit League tournament titles to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament each season since 2009. Overall, the women's basketball team has qualified for the postseason seven consecutive seasons, starting their run with back-to-back Women's NIT appearances while completing the transition to full Division I status. South Dakota State's long history of women's basketball success includes winning the NCAA Division II national title in 2003.
SDSU enjoys a rich history in both men's and women's cross country. The Jackrabbit men's team won six national titles before the move to Division I status and claimed more than 30 conference titles. SDSU's success has continued at the Division I level as the men have won four of the last five Summit League championships. The Jackrabbit women's team won a pair of national titles and 11 conference championships, including the Summit League title in 2008. Both teams are coached by former Olympic marathoner, Rod DeHaven.
The Jackrabbit Equestrian team has qualified for the National Collegiate Equestrian Association national meet five times in Western competition. The SDSU program is one of the top collegiate equestrian programs in the nation. In addition, the also sent the Hunt Seat squad to NCEA Nationals for the first time in spring of 2013 and reached the quarterfinals of each division. The Jackrabbit equestrian trains and competes at the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center, located on the northeast corner of campus.
The SDSU football program has been on the rise in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision, reaching the playoffs three times in the past five seasons. After qualifiying for the playoffs for the first time in 2009, the Jacks made back-to-back postseason appearances in 2012 and 2013. At each appearance, the Jacks won their first-round playoffs. Currently, a new indoor practice football stadium is in the owrks at the existing Coughlin-Alumni Stadium site, with a completion slated for 2016. The Jackrabbit football program has produced a number of standouts who have gone on to play in the National Football Leageue, including Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Langer and current Indianapolis Colts kicker and Super Bowl here, Adam Vinatieri.
The Jackrabbit men's team and women's golf teams have found a measure of success whle competing regularly against some of the top collegiate programs in the region and nationally. Since joining the Summit League in 2007, the Jackrabbit men have won six tournaments, with the women adding two tournament victories. The Jackrabbis practive at the Brookings Country Club and host annual tournaments in the fall in Sioux Falls.
The Jackrabbit women's soccer team has established itself as a perennial contender in the Summit League. SDSU won at least a share of the league's regular season title three times and posted double digit victories in five of the last six seasons. In 2008, the Jacks became the first SDSU squad to post a victory in NCAA postseason play at the Division I leverl, with a 1-0 victory over nationally ranked Colorado in the the first round of the NCAA College Cup. SDSU has hosted the Summit League postseason tournament three times at Fishback Soccer Complex in 2009, 2010 and 2012.
The women's Jackrabbit softball program is in the quest for consistency and improvement with the Summit League. SDSU enters the 2014 season in seach of qualifiying for the four-team Summit League postseason tournament for the first time since 2010, when they poste an 11-9 mark in league play.
The SDSU men and women's swimming and diving teams have consistently posted upper-division finishes at teh Summit League Championshis in recent years. The Jackrabbit men's team posted their second consecutive runner-up finish at the 2013 league championship. The Jackrabbit women's team posted two runner-up finishes in the last four years. Jackrabbit mentor, Brad Erickson is on of the longest-tenured head coaches in the country, having directed SDSU's swimming and diving programs since 1976.
Both the men's and women's tennis programs are on the upswing at SDSU. The Jackrabbit men's team has qualified for the four-team Summit League Championships each of the past two seasons. The women's squad reached the postseason for the first time in the spring of 2013. The tennis teams compete at Hillcrest Park, complete with 10 tennis courts.
SDSU consistently places track and field student-athletes on the medal stand at Summit League championships, as well as had other students move onto NCAA competition in recent years. The track and field program will receive a boost in the form of a competition venue for indoor track and field with the completion of the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in the summer of 2014. The complex will feature one of the only 300-meter tracks in the region.
The SDSU volleyball program is currently in a rebuilding phase; prior to falling off the pace in 2013, the Jackrabbits had posted winning records in two of the three previous seasons. In 2007, the volleybally squad became the first Jackrabbit team to compete in the NCAA tournament at the Division I level after winning the Summit League postseason tournament. Along with the Jackrabbit basketball and wrestling teams, the volleyball program calls Frost Arena home.
The Jackrabbit wrestling team is poised for big accomplishments under the direction of second-year head coach, Chris Bono. SDSU's recent recruiting classes have been touted as among the best in the nation, setting up the Jacks for future success in both Western Wrestling Conference and NCAA competition. SDSU boasts a proud history in wrestling including 21 national champions and more than 100 All-America honorees prior to moving to Division I competition.
