The Brookings Human Rights Commission will sponsor the fifth annual Brookings Juneteenth Celebration on Wednesday, June 19, at Pioneer Park in Brookings from 5 to 8 p.m.
The event commemorates the important U.S. milestone of the emancipation of enslaved Black people from slavery, which occurred on June 19, 1865.
All community members— inclusive of race, ethnicity and all other identities— are welcome at the Brookings Juneteenth Celebration. There is no cost to attend, nor is registration required. Pioneer Park is situated at Sixth Street and First Avenue.
The event will feature:
• The Brass Kickin’ Riverband, a nine-person band with joyous grooves and energetic rhythms.
• A drum circle, song and dance.
• Kids’ activities, including bubbles and art projects.
• Food, such as sandwiches, snacks and beverages, for purchase.
• Vendors, including Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs.
