Be Part of History: Help Create Brookings’ America’s 250th Community Mural

by |

In Brookings, we know that the best way to celebrate something big is to do it together. As America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday in 2026, our community has a unique opportunity to be part of something lasting and meaningful.

This spring, residents, businesses, and organizations are invited to help create a Community Mural — a large mosaic made up of 950 individual tiles, each painted by members of our community. When completed, the tiles will come together to form a mural that celebrates America’s 250th anniversary and the Brookings community that continues to shape its future.

The mural will be unveiled on June 4 at the Brookings VFW, but the most important part of the project happens between now and the end of May, when the community comes together to paint the tiles that will bring the mural to life.

How to Participate

Getting involved is simple, and it’s a great activity for businesses, civic groups, and classrooms. Each participant will receive a mural kit that includes:

  • One tile
  • Paint
  • Brushes
  • Instructions
  • Step-by-step guidance

One of the most fun ways to participate is by hosting a tile painting party. Gather your coworkers or organization members, paint your tiles together, and be part of a community-wide project that will be enjoyed for years to come.

This project is led by the Brookings Regional Growth Alliance and funded through a grant from the Brookings Public Art Commission.
