Brookings ignites with excitement as nearly 20,000 fans gather for each home SDSU Jackrabbit football game. Many get an early start by enjoying pre-game festivities surrounding Dana J Dykhouse Stadium.
Tailgating starts five hours before kickoff, giving visitors plenty of time to set up their canopy tents, grill delicious food and get pumped up to cheer on the Jackrabbits. While some tailgate areas are reserved, general admission spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis in parking lot 160 to the east of the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center. A quick check of the SDSU campus map can give visitors an overview of tailgating opportunities.
All visitors can walk through the entire tailgating area and join in on bean bag toss, hook-and-ring, or play catch with a football. The SDSU Alumni and Foundation tent is handy for those who want the experience but don’t have the supplies. The tent, officially called the First Bank & Trust Alumni Rabbit Den, is located on the southwest side of the stadium and offers complimentary food and beverages. Freewill donations help offset costs.
Ninety minutes before kickoff, the excitement builds as the SDSU Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band performs in the tailgating area. The performance signals it’s time to head to the stadium.
From the first whistle to the final buzzer, fans are part of the action, yelling out their best “Wooo” on first downs (IYKYK), and singing along to “Ring the Bells” or “The Yellow and Blue” after touchdowns.
At the end of the game, the stadium lights dim but energy reignites as fans move to Downtown Brookings. Win or lose, the traditions and community spirit keep fans coming back all season long.
