Imagine this: It’s a sunny day, and visitors make their way to the SDSU Dairy Bar, a beloved spot that has been serving up delicious treats since 1929. As they stroll through SDSU’s campus, the air seems to carry a sense of nostalgia. The Dairy Bar has a rich history, beginning as a simple service counter where students sold ice cream, butter, cheese and milk.
Fast forward to 1990, and the Dairy Bar became well-known for its low-fat cheese and ice cream production. But the real star of the show? The iconic cookies and cream ice cream flavor, which was invented in 1979 by the Dairy Plant Manager at the time with the help of two students. In 2013 it was named the best ice cream treat in South Dakota by Food Network Magazine. A testament to a sweet legacy.
Today, the Dairy Bar offers 16 unique flavors, with over 100 different varieties having graced its menu over the years. Seasonal delights like peppermint and caramel apple make appearances, while visitors can also enjoy six different kinds of cheese, available in larger bricks or cubed.
For those curious about how all this deliciousness comes to life, a tour of the Dairy Plant is available. If time is tight, visitors can still get a sneak peek into one of the production rooms, where they can witness the incredible work done by dairy science students.
Whether enjoying a guided tour, learning about dairy science, or simply savoring a scoop (or two) of student-made goodness, a visit to the SDSU Dairy Bar, located at 1111 College Ave, Brookings, SD, is an experience that shouldn’t be missed.
