Live from under the bandshell, the Brookings Community Band fills Pioneer Park weekly with rhythmic melodies during the months of June and July. This summertime staple brings together old and new friends for an enjoyable evening of music and camaraderie.
“It’s truly Americana at its finest,” David Reynolds, director of the band for the past 17 years said. “This is what life in the midwest is all about – everyone coming together at the park, listening to live music and having a great time doing it.”
The band performs seven concerts each summer. All concerts are free, with complimentary snacks such as fresh watermelon slices or fudge brownies.
The 80-plus member band begins practice in May and presents about a dozen pieces for every performance. Every concert has a set list matching the week’s theme from “Broadway Comes to Brookings” to “Jukebox Jamboree.” The musical variety appeals to various ages, ensuring everyone who attends hears something they will enjoy.
“We always play music that will entertain the audience,” Reynolds said. “We promise attendees will leave the concert humming something.”
One of the most popular activities at concerts is the children’s march. Kids are invited to wear old hats from The Pride of the Dakotas, South Dakota State University’s marching band, and parade to the music of John Philip Sousa or Karl King.
Musicians, community members and visitors all value the band and are happy to continue appreciating live music together.
“it’s a tradition – one we hope will remain in the Brookings community for many, many years,” Reynolds said.
