In South Dakota, our locals grow up to embrace winter in all it’s white, fluffy and cold glory. Brookings is no different!
Every President’s Day weekend, area attractions come together to showcase amazing indoor and outdoor winter activities. Whether you enjoy building snow forts, sipping hot international drinks or getting fancy and going to a winter ball, Frost Fest is the perfect mash-up for the entire family.

– Snow Ball and Meal at Children’s Museum of South Dakota
– Ice Carving Demo in Downtown Brookings
– Doggy Date Night at McCrory Gardens
– Sled Hockey Tournament

History lives on in Brookings residential districts. Brookings Historic Preservation Commission offers two walking tours: the University Residential Historic District and the Central Historic District. Brochures are available at the Visit Brookings office.
The University Residential Historic District features some of Brookings’ oldest buildings, including 33 homes once owned by early professors, doctors and business leaders. The Central Residential District showcases 34 homes built between 1891 and 1941, featuring diverse architectural styles and a portion of Brookings’ urban arboretum.
