The Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center stands as a limitless beacon of creativity, power and performance for the Brookings community and arts enthusiasts from around the region.
Visitors to The Oscar experience a space where talent thrives and inspiration flows. The facility is used for performances by the SDSU School of Performing Arts, recitals for Brookings schools, Brookings Community Theatre, Prairie Repertory Theatre and Woodbine Productions. The Oscar is also home to the SDSU Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band.
The building is named for Oscar Larson, founder of Larson Storm Doors, in recognition of his family’s generous contribution to the community. The original space opened in 2002. In 2019, the facility underwent a major renovation, adding several classrooms for the School of Performing Arts, including the Oscar Larson Theatre, Founders Recital Hall and Dance Studio.
The Oscar is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and thoughtful amenities, offering an exceptional experience for both performers and guests. From the beautiful Founder’s Recital Hall, designed to look like a South Dakota sunrise, to the mosaic floors in the band and choir rooms, designed to look like Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, the design elements of The Oscar are impressive. Students can also access impressive practice pods that can mimic several different spaces, including a stadium or concert hall.
Located on the east side of the SDSU campus, The Oscar is a place where creativity and the arts can always shine bright. At its heart, the center stands as a testament to the power of the arts to bring people together, celebrate culture and cast a spotlight on creativity in Brookings.
