South Dakota State University students have a new way to develop roots in Brookings while pursuing their degrees.
The Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce’s Connect Committee leads the community’s workforce retention efforts. Committee members are volunteers with leadership experience, are team players and represent a chamber member business. They are responsible for developing and promoting the mission, programs and image of the Connect Committee.
The Connect Committee actively works to create an inclusive network for young professionals. Social, networking opportunities and professional development programs help these like-minded individuals build relationships and strengthen their careers. Another aspect of this committee focuses on the students who decide to stay, live and work in Brookings post-graduation.
The committee provides valuable resources to SDSU students, young professionals and new residents through initiatives like the Work Ready Bootcamp. Through this program, students are equipped with essential skills for the workforce such as networking, professional development and leadership training. By offering these resources, the committee provides students with a smooth transition from college to career, with the goal of being they ultimately choose to stay in Brookings. The Chamber conducted a 2024 SDSU student survey showing the number of students planning to stay in Brookings post-graduation has doubled since 2022. This reflects increased student engagement and community growth, driven by the committee’s focus on programs and initiatives in Brookings.
