Walk among 25 acres of unique flowers, trees of all different shapes and sizes and endless fields of soft grasses in a harmonious setting. McCrory Gardens was named after S.A. McCrory, who headed the horticulture department at South Dakota State University from 1947 until his death in 1964. Development of the formal gardens began in the 1960s with work on a two-acre formal area using annual, perennial and ground cover plants. Since then the garden has grown into beautiful proportions of robust colors that change with the seasons, including 14 formal gardens and a rock garden with waterfall. Added in 2012, the McCrory Gardens Education & Visitor Center features a help desk, gift shop, meeting rooms, banquet room and much more.
McCrory Gardens is also part of our Brookings Great 8 Passport program, encourging visitors and locals to explore our one-of-a-kind attractions.
In an event space league of its own, the McCrory Gardens Education & Visitor Center is the epitome of beauty in convention form. Brides swoon over the secret garden effect and outdoor patio, while business leaders revel in the unique architecture of the Great Hall, capable of holding meetings, conferences, seminars, workshops and more.
